I’m an SAP guy, always been and most likely always will be. I love the big German company and all its products and peculiarities. It is their software which I tweaked, hacked and implemented across a multitude of great companies and boy it has been an adventure.
SAP is a different company today than 20 years ago. I have seen SAP transform from a closed company with little room for innovation, to a company where innovation and developers determine the future of the company and its direction. Where until a couple of years ago there was no true platform to build innovations on, today there is, and she is called “HANA”.
SAP HANA (“High-Performance Analytic Appliance”) is an in-memory, column-oriented, relational database management system which besides being freakishly fast, is also a platform to develop great solutions on. Solutions which all share the same thing: great performance and great processing power. HANA has a build in web server (XS engine) which can turn any table into a RESTful service with only a few lines of code. Exposing data to the outside world, in a unified way (Json/XML) is therefore a piece of cake. Also HTML5 applications (in the SAP world referred to as UI5, the name of the SAP framework) can be created on the HANA platform itself and act as a thin client between the number crunching database and its (mobile) user.
It was little over a year ago when I laid eyes on Estimote beacons for the first time. I immediately understood the game changing potential of these little guys. It wasn’t too long before I decided to combine HANA and Estimote beacons, it has been a match made in heaven.
Not only is it very easy to develop applications using the data from the beacons, also being able to make sensible information out of all the data an Estimote beacon generates is very easy. Combine beacons with SAP HANA and you will have a place to store and process all that data a beacon generates.
Let me give an example of innovations my team and I build combining Estimote beacons and SAP HANA:
HEMR – HANA Electronical Medical Record
Our latest innovation is for the healthcare world. We build an app which can identify patients using beacons. Once the beacon identifies a patient, his records are pulled from SAP HANA and doctors are able to push back new stats into the database with a single push of a button. As every patient has a unique beacon, wrong patient identification is something of the past.
We can keep track of our patient’s location by using Estimote latest innovation called “Estimote Indoor Location”. Imagine that, patients wandering the hospital would be able to be found easily by using the mapping capabilities of the new Estimote SDK.
Estimote also recently activated the sensors in the beacons to measure temperature and movements of the beacons. We thankfully made use of this new functionality in the HEMR app. By using the sensors, we can measure the movements of our patients and correlate that to bed sores. The warmer the room, the less the patient is likely to move, increasing the risk of severe injuries.
As a final monitoring, we can track unexpected movements like falling. An alarm will sound if a patient is in an insecure situation!
